Glenda Greenhouse

performance activist, persona, environmental radio show host, writer & blogger...

Glenda Greenhouse started with a performance about compost...and activism. Naturally! Because Compost supplies transformation. It's also a great way to talk about waste, decay and the process, or work, of change.

Things about Glenda (from Glenda):

I'm partial to the color green even though I wonder if it's a tad cliche

I have a thing for vintage aprons

Glenda Greenhouse was conceived as part of a class project.

I was half of the performance activist duo The Composters, from 2004-2009.

My creation story involves the death of an exterminator, cleaning product and a "lightbulb" moment.

I host the radio show Greenhouse Rebellion on wdbx.org - Monday 10am CST

Glenda was chosen as my first name in honor of the good witch in The Wizard of Oz!

Greenhouse was chosen as a last name because it needed to be an alliteration. That's the Composter name rule - first name iconic figure - second name environmental issue, - an alliteration. After that, I realized...it was perfect!

The greenhouse gas effect: I had an early experience with this as that is what we use to say about the bathroom after my father (Gerry Greenhouse) would leave in the morning. Between the cigarette smoke and the leftover morning dump smell - nothing could exist in there!!! We had no idea that "Greenhouse Effect" was being discussed in other places. Now I know it's not the same thing by a long shot - but, I can't help seeing the correlation.

I love Greenhouses. Perhaps it's their status as a place for growth. As if that isn't enough they symbolizing sustainability, and nurture it. Greenhouses feel hopeful...don't ya think?

I like to envision Greenhouses of the mind, where ideas are grown like plants and stories are shared and honored, as if their growth depended on it.

If you want a "composter" name, it's easy to choose. The first name must be an iconic and/or spiritual leader. The second name (an alliteration) is an environmental issue, condition or action.

I am currently creating performance pieces for a full length show. Ingredients so far: mother earth, reports from Copenhagen, the BE nothing campaign and Cooking with Glenda!
